At the beginning of lockdown, Munro were appointed the Goodmayes Hospital project which aimed to bring 200 rooms online and complete £2.4M worth of work within 15 days. This was an extremely last-minute project of which Munro and employees engaged extremely quickly to undertake the design, modification and refurbishment of a disused hospital building in East London.
The objective of the project and client needs was to bring a former disused building back into use so that the NHS could move the palliative care team and their patients out of the main King George's Hospital into this new facility, making provision to isolate patients for COVID-19 care and treatment.
The project, which was carried out in 15 days to meet the deadline, saw the building structurally altered to create a 4 ward, 200 bed facility. Part of the project required a temporary trailer toilet style pod facility to be integrated to look like it formed part of the existing building.
Design development in parallel with the installation was key to achieving the programme, requiring a collaborative, dedicated and flexible approach to the project and the challenges that occurred resulting from the pandemic itself.
