Environmental sustainability is becoming more and more important in building design, construction and maintenance. Research shows how in a commercial building the majority of the energy consumption comes from the lighting (39%). 28% is used for HVAC and 33% for office equipment, computers and refrigeration (US Energy Information Administration).

Reducing energy consumption is a key objective for many building managers. With some key enhancements in lighting technology in recent years, there are some simple ways to achieve reduced energy consumption in your premises.

Replacing your existing lighting with LEDs can reduce electricity bills by up to 50%. One of the main reasons for this is that the majority of the energy consumption used by an LED light goes into producing light, whereas with traditional incandescent lamps almost 90% of the energy is lost in the form of heat.

LED lighting also has a big impact on a buildings EPC rating (Energy Performance Certificate). If you haven’t already considered this, you should. As of April 1st this year, new legislation will come into force stipulating that any let commercial building must have an EPC rating of A-E. This will make letting or leasing of commercial property with an EPC rating of F or G illegal.
