Framework:       Building Services Engineering Craftsperson Level 3

Hours:                  Minimum Basic, 37.5 Hours per week

Duration:             3 years + 6 months for EPA (End Point Assessment)

 

Role Description

We are looking for a determined and flexible individual to join our Mechanical Apprenticeship Programme. The successful candidate will be expected to commit themselves to learning both on site and at college in order to gain their Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering Craftsperson. In return we offer the opportunity to work within a team of highly skilled engineers in a lively and welcoming environment with full training and support provided.

A craftsperson undertakes the planning, installation, testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and decommissioning of systems heating, chilled water, hot water, and cold-water systems. These systems are used within a variety of locations, including workplaces, businesses, schools, and hospitals.

 

Over the three year apprenticeship you will learn how to:

  • Understand and carry out safe working practices in Building Services Engineering
  • Understand how to apply scientific principles, communicate and environmental protections measures in Building Services Engineering
  • Understand and carry out pipework fabrication techniques for industrial and commercial systems
  • Understand industrial and commercial heating and chilled water system installation techniques
  • Understand industrial and commercial hot and cold-water system installation techniques
  • Install industrial and commercial heating and ventilating systems
  • Understand and install industrial and commercial piped gas systems
  • Understand and install industrial and commercial Public Health drainage systems
  • Understand and apply testing and commissioning principles to Industrial and Commercial piped systems

Applicants will be required to demonstrate:

  • Good numeracy and literacy ability
  • Good communication skills
  • A keen interest in building design and sustainable/environmental issues
  • An interest in construction
  • An aptitude for technical subjects or be practically orientated; especially for mechanical, electrical projects
  • An ability to analyze and solve problems, including a practical hands-on approach Applicants should also be able to:
  • Show a willingness to learn and apply the knowledge gained within the workplace
  • Demonstrate motivation to succeed within the industry/sector
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with a range of people
  • To show careful thought and consideration when working on own initiative or in a team, especially in difficult situations and be able to take responsibility when the need arises
  • Demonstrate potential to complete the qualifications which are part of the apprenticeship programme
  • Demonstrate excellent timekeeping skills
  • GCSE Grades 4 but preferably 5 and above or equivalent in English Language or Literature, Maths and a Science or Technical based subjects are essential to meet course requirements
  • Level 1 or 2 Plumbing & Heating Studies or an equivalent qualification is preferable but not essential

 

Applicants will need to have the ability to work at heights or in confined spaces and be aware that because of the varied tasks that will be expected to be undertaken in relation to the role, some of these may be physically and exhaustively challenging.

Individuals will need to make themselves fully aware of the safety issues and the regulations associated with the work they carry out.

Full Health & Safety training will be provided for all apprentices. Apprentices will always be working as part of an experienced team & will be supervised by senior personnel.

Our apprenticeship programme is fundamental to this and is a pathway to a long term career, with many of our directors and senior managers of today having started their careers as an apprentice. Each apprentice will be allocated a mentor, who will support them throughout their apprenticeship. The mentor is a senior member of staff who will conduct quarterly reviews with their apprentice in order to monitor their progress.
