Electrical Apprentice, Cambridge / Colchester

Framework:       NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Systems & Equipment

Hours:                  Minimum Basic, 37.5 hours per week

Duration:             3 years + End Point Assessment (6-12 months)

 

Role Description

Are you outgoing, ambitious and looking for an exciting career that makes use of your practical skills?

We are looking for a determined and flexible individual to join our Electrical Apprenticeship Programme. The successful candidate will be expected to commit themselves to learning both on site and at college in order to gain their NVQ Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment. In return we offer the opportunity to work within a team of highly skilled engineers in a lively and welcoming environment with full training and support provided.

The apprenticeship operates on a hybrid of day, and a block release system meaning that the successful candidate will spend time at college completing their academic studies and time on site gaining practical experience. The last/ later years are more site based where you will prepare for your AM2 Practical Assessment. On successful completion you will gain your NVQ3 Qualification. Over the four year apprenticeship you will learn how to:

  • Install, maintain and repair electrical services (e.g. lighting, sockets, fire alarms, emergency lighting & lighting controls)
  • Work indoors and outdoors and be prepared to sometimes work at height and in confined spaces
  • Work with little or no direct supervisions; relying on their own initiative
  • Develop good working relationships with people and colleagues
  • Read both building and engineering drawings
  • Understand wiring and circuit diagrams
  • Select (within limits) materials and equipment
  • Inspect and test electrical installations
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on a range of circuits and equipment
  • Plan electrical activities
  • Install complex electrical systems
  • Commission and decommission electrical systems
  • Maintain a safe working environment for electrical activities
  • Contribute to the improvement of business products and services for electrical work activities
  • Certify in and abide to all Health & Safety standards on a construction site

Applicants will be required to demonstrate:

 

  • Good numeracy and literacy ability
  • Good communication skills
  • A keen interest in building design and sustainable/environmental issues
  • An interest in technology
  • An aptitude for technical subjects or be practically orientated; especially for mechanical, electrical projects
  • Managing their time well whilst on site.
  • An ability to analyse and solve problems, including a practical hands-on approach

  • To show careful thought and consideration when working on own initiative or in a team, especially in difficult situations and be able to take responsibility when the need arises
  • Demonstrate potential to complete the qualifications which are part of the apprenticeship programme
  • Demonstrate excellent timekeeping skills
  • GCSE Grades minimum grade 4 but preferably 5 or equivalent in English Language or Literature, Maths and a Science or Technical based subject, are essential to meet course requirements.
  • Level 2 Electrical Installation or an equivalent qualification is preferable but not essential.

 

Applicants will need to have the ability to work at heights or in confined spaces and be aware that because of the varied tasks that will be expected to be undertaken in relation to the role, some of these may be physically and exhaustively challenging.

Individuals will need to make themselves fully aware of the safety issues and the regulations associated with the work they carry out.

A colour blind test with a pass result from an Optician will be required before being able to be entered into our apprenticeship scheme.

Full Health & Safety training will be provided for all apprentices. Apprentices will always be working as part of an experienced team & will be supervised by senior personnel.

Our apprenticeship programme is fundamental to this and is a pathway to a long term career, with many of our directors and senior managers of today having started their careers as an apprentice.
